Training to be a Music Therapist
Entry Requirements for Training: For entry to all post graduate training courses in the UK a degree or diploma in music is required. Applicants who have followed a different entry route e.g. a degree in psychology or sociology can must be able to demonstrate a comparable level of musical skills.
A high degree of musicianship in two instruments is also essential. This can include voice, strings, brass etc., but many of the courses specify that piano or guitar must be one of the instruments.
A broad knowledge of different styles of music is often necessary, as well as an ability to use music flexibly and creatively.
Can I train in N. Ireland?
There are no training courses leading to qualification in Northern Ireland. However, the NIMTT has facilitated supervised student placements for the University of Limerick and some of the UK courses.
